Hi Laurence,

It's possible currently to add more than one cover to any one edition, so this isn't necessarily a problem. I guess the trick comes when we need to choose which cover to select to represent the edition.

I don't think a different cover is enough to justify a new edition record. We have too many dupes already! :)

For books that have been reprinted many times – Penguin Classics, for example – there are often numerous covers that share the same ISBN. I'm not sure if Open Library cares about separating editions that differ only by cover design.

By the way, I just spotted that some of the people taking pictures of books on Flickr are using an ISBN-related machine tag - book:isbn=

Hi Andy - there's nothing stopping people from creating a machine tag that refers to a book's ISBN on Open Library. So, you might refer to Alain de Botton's novel, "The Romantic Movement" with a machine tag like openlibrary:isbn=0312144032.

That's the lovely thing about machine tags - you can structure them however you like. They're somewhat folksonomic like that.

ISBNs are problematic for a few different reasons - they only came into existence in the late 60s. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Standard_Book_Number.

So, books published before then simply don't use them. I've heard tales of some publishers recycling ISBNs too! Not as unique as you'd think, but as I've described, there's nothing stopping people from folding ISBNs into these new Open Library machine tags.

A great idea, but surely better to tag with the ISBN?
