Bundle o' Updates

In addition to our Lending Launch last week, we’re constantly adding new bits and pieces to the site almost every day. Here’s a bunch of things we’ve been working on:

  • Over 10,000 human edits last week!
    Wow! So great to see so many people making large and small contributions to the catalog. Some standout editors include Fiction Addiction, menolly42, Anonymous (no, really), and an actually anonymous editor who has taken an interest in books written in Raeto Romance languages. We’re also seeing new books being added in a variety of languages, by R. Knoop, for example. [this is good]

Relaunch is complete!

Hello! Just wanted to let you know that we’ve just begun the process of launching our redesigned Open Library site. This may mean that there are a few hiccups along the way, but we hope to be through the woods as soon as possible.

We’ll post back here as soon as it’s stable, and in the meantime, If you spot anything obviously broken or weird, please leave us a comment.

Update, 6:56PM: OK. It’s been about 3 hours since we flipped the switch, and the new site seems to be holding together. Yay! We’ll be posting more about the redesign over the coming days – there are a ton of changes we’d like to highlight specifically, like the fact that we’ve shifted to using CC0 for any edits made to the records on Open Library.

Please be aware there are a few features which have been put on ice temporarily  – full text search and managing the site in multiple languages for example. We want to devote proper attention to improving those features as soon as we can. They will return!

Open Library URLs are changing

We are in the process of upgrading the openlibrary.org website to include the new functionality.

As part of this upgrade, the URLs of the openlibrary.org website will change from /a/, /b/, /l/ and /user/ to /authors/, /books/, /languages/ and /people/ respectively. After this change, the old URLs will get redirected to the new ones.

We are not anticipating any downtime during this process. However, there could be momentary failures in loading some pages.

We’ll post here once the change is over.

The Open Library team is seeking an experienced Python developer to join our small, experienced team. Born in 2007, Open Library is a large, wiki-editable library catalog and all our data and software is open. We want to enhance the way data moves in and out of Open Library by building features that make it simple for people to contribute records to the library as well as extracting them. We want to connect our records to as many online resources as possible, to be the locus for information about books online.

You will be responsible for core application development (running a system called Infogami) as well as development of new website features. You will review and enhance the Open Library’s current API offering, as well as looking out on to the broader web to find and develop useful API integrations back into Open Library. Must haves:

  • Software engineering experience, 3-5 years
  • Mad Python skillz
  • Applied use of PostgreSQL, Ubuntu/Linux, JavaScript/AJAX
  • Demonstrable working code online
  • Experience with triplestore database architecture; RDF/XML formats
  • Experience with open-source development projects and practice
  • Ability to work under your own supervision towards a shared outcome
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Desirable:

  • Wikipedia hacks
  • Experience using GitHub or similar
  • Demonstrable, creative API integration projects, preferably with mashes from more than one system
  • A presence in the Python community
  • An interest in excellent user interface design
  • Experience working with SOLR/Lucene
  • Experience with data processing (we have millions of records)!
  • Experience working in teams dispersed around the world
  • Interest in data visualisation
  • Located in, or prepared to relocate to San Francisco

We’re working towards big goals at Open Library. The online presence of books is a very interesting space at the moment, ripe for an innovative outlook and wide integration with all sorts of other systems.
